The right light color makes all the difference!

Discover how warm, neutral or cool light influences your mood and what possibilities light bulbs from Shelly offer.

What is the light colour?

The light colour describes the colour tone of the light that you perceive with your eyes. It is measured by the colour temperature in Kelvin (K). This value shows you whether the light appears cool or warm.

The lower the Kelvin number, the warmer and more yellowish the light appears. Candlelight, for example, has a light colour of only approx. 1,500 K.

Higher Kelvin values show colder, bluer light tones. Daylightisaround 5,500 K.

Light colors therefore influence the effect of the room, but also your well-being: Warm white has a cosy and relaxing effect, while cool white can promote concentration. When choosing the light colour, you should therefore consider what atmosphere the room should have and what function the light should fulfil.

What light colours are available?

The light colors can be divided into these three broad categories:

Warm white light

With a light color of approx. 2,700 to 3,300 Kelvin, warm white light creates a cosy atmosphere. This yellowish-to-reddish light creates a relaxed atmosphere - whether in restaurants, bars, lounges or in your own home.

Neutral white light

Neutral white is the perfect light colour for areas with higher demands on concentration and visual performance, without completely losing its feel-good character. With approx. 3,300 to 5,300 Kelvin, contrasts stand out clearly and distinctly.

Daylight white light

This light colour is similar to natural daylight at midday. With a colour temperature of over 5,300 Kelvin, daylight white or cool white light has a high blue component. It offers the best colour rendering and highlights the smallest details.

What light colour should you use for indoor lighting?

The right light colour for your home varies from room to room:

In the living room and bedroom, warm white light with approx. 2,700 to 3,300 Kelvin creates a cosy atmosphere. Perfect for relaxing or watching a series in the evening.

In the kitchen, neutral white light (approx. 3,300 to 5,300 Kelvin) ensures a clear view when cooking, washing salads or chopping vegetables.

Daylight white or cool white light with over 5,300 Kelvin is suitable for bathrooms and hallways, as it covers the entire visible light spectrum and therefore all spectral colours to a large extent, making it ideal for applying make-up or getting dressed. Daylight white is also helpful for your home office, as the natural lighting effect promotes your concentration.

What influence does the choice of colour temperature have?

The colour temperature of the light also influences your body's biorhythm. Warm white light with a low colour temperature is similar to evening light and promotes melatonin production, which prepares the body for sleep. This light calms and supports a restful night - ideal for your bedroom.

Cool light with a higher colour temperature (over 5,000 Kelvin), on the other hand, inhibits the release of melatonin and increases alertness. It simulates daylight and promotes concentration and activity, which is why it is particularly suitable for offices and workrooms in the morning and during the day.

You  Can even support your body's natural sleep and wake phases with the right colour temperature.
